Identifying methanol waste
Methanol is a flammable, toxic alcohol used as a chemical feedstock, solvent and fuel. Methyl alcohol is another name for the same substance. It is not interchangeable with ethanol or isopropyl alcohol, and a description such as “alcohol” is not enough to identify a waste stream.
Use the product label and supplier safety data sheet to establish the starting material. If the contents of a container are uncertain, that uncertainty belongs in the waste description. A methanol CAS number should not be used to describe a mixed or unidentified liquid unless the available information supports that identity.
How process use changes methanol waste
Unused laboratory stock, contaminated fuel and methanol-bearing process washings can have very different compositions. Water, catalysts, dissolved products and other solvents introduced during use can change the hazards and whether recovery is technically suitable.
A collection drum that has received waste from several operations cannot be described from one starting-product safety data sheet alone. If a formulation or production process changes between batches, the waste description needs to reflect the material that is actually present.
Recovery and treatment of methanol waste
A known, segregated methanol stream may be suitable for recovery if its composition fits the receiving process. Mixed or contaminated material may need a different authorised treatment route. Packaging, transport and receiving requirements follow from the assessed waste, not from the word “methanol” alone.
Waste methanol remains flammable and toxic. Drain disposal, uncontrolled evaporation and deliberate mixing with other liquids are not suitable disposal shortcuts. Damaged or leaking containers need assessment that takes their condition into account.
Details that matter for methanol waste
The description should cover the methanol product or grade, concentration, water content, process use and known additives or contaminants. Quantity, container type and container condition help distinguish clean stock from fuel waste, process washings or mixed solvent waste.
