Water-based paint is not automatically non-hazardous; pigments, additives and contamination still need to be considered. Solvent-based coatings bring flammability and vapour issues. Keeping identifiable products separate preserves the information needed to decide whether reuse, recovery or treatment is realistic.

Tins, wipes and cleaning solvent
Part-full tins contain both packaging and paint waste. Empty-looking tins may still carry significant residue, while wipes and cleaning solvent are separate contaminated materials. They should be identified rather than assumed to be included in ordinary metal recycling or in a liquid paint collection.
Reuse versus waste disposal
Unused paint may sometimes have a genuine reuse option, but that depends on its condition and an actual recipient. Spoiled or mixed material needs to be assessed as waste in its current condition. Once products have been combined, the original labels may no longer describe the mixture accurately.

Is every water-based paint non-hazardous?
No. Ingredients and contamination can still make a water-based coating hazardous waste.
Can partly full tins go into metal recycling?
Remaining paint must be assessed as contents, not ignored because the package is metal.
Should cleaning solvent be added to waste paint?
Keep solvent separately identified. Mixing can change hazards and limit receiving options.
Does unused paint always have a reuse option?
No. Reuse depends on the condition of the paint and a recipient willing and able to take it.
How should paint-contaminated wipes be handled?
Contaminated wipes are a separate waste from liquid paint and should be described according to the residues they contain.
