Tanks, sludge and water layers
Fuel tanks can contain settled sludge and separate water beneath the usable-looking liquid. Pumping the upper layer may therefore leave contaminated material behind. Removing the liquid does not clean or decommission the tank.
Safe transfer and vessel condition
Transfer equipment and access must suit the fuel and the storage vessel, with vapour and spill risks controlled. Portable containers and bulk tanks need different handling. Removing fuel also does not decommission the tank or establish that it is ready for a different product.

Can contaminated petrol and diesel be mixed for disposal?
Keep existing streams identified and do not mix them to simplify collection. Existing mixtures must be described accurately.
Will filtering make all contaminated fuel usable?
No. Filtration can address some contamination, but it cannot correct every reason fuel has become unsuitable.
Does removing the fuel also clean the tank?
No. Liquid removal can leave sludge, water or other residue behind, and tank cleaning is separate work.
Can sludge remain after liquid fuel is pumped out?
Yes. Settled material may need a separate cleaning or recovery method.
