Sodium hypochlorite strength and product condition
Sodium hypochlorite is commonly supplied as a water-based bleaching or disinfecting solution. Its hazard profile depends on strength and formulation. The CAS number identifies the hypochlorite substance but does not state the concentration of a particular bottle, drum or tank.
Labelled product strength and, where stated, available chlorine are both relevant. They are not interchangeable figures unless there is a valid basis for conversion. Sodium hypochlorite can also decompose during storage, so the original label may not fully describe old or deteriorated stock.
Compatibility and damaged containers
Acids can cause sodium hypochlorite solution to release chlorine, and other incompatible chemicals can create serious hazards. Unwanted hypochlorite therefore needs to be assessed as the product or waste actually present, without improvised neutralisation or mixing.
Container damage, signs of pressure, unusual appearance or suspected contamination can change the risk associated with the waste. A suspected reaction or release is an immediate site-safety matter and should be handled under the site’s emergency arrangements rather than as a routine waste-removal task.
Assessment before treatment or disposal
A sealed surplus product, a partly used cleaning solution and washwater from contaminated equipment are different waste streams. Concentration, other ingredients and process contamination determine classification and the type of authorised facility that may be able to accept the material.
Do not assume that weak or aged hypochlorite can be discharged to a drain. Any discharge route must be lawful and based on the actual waste composition; dilution does not replace waste classification. Existing product or analytical information is preferable to informal testing of suspect containers.
What to establish before disposal
The product name, supplier safety data sheet, labelled strength, approximate age and storage history establish what the material is and how it has been stored. Quantity, container condition and known contamination are also important, particularly for old stock, damaged containers or material no longer in its original packaging.
