Intact items and spills differ
A sealed mercury-containing item is a different job from a release into the surrounding area.
Cleanup may extend beyond the visible item
Removing a broken instrument does not establish that nearby surfaces are free from mercury contamination.
Contained mercury and equipment
Mercury-containing equipment should not be opened or emptied before disposal. The complete item, its condition and any associated contaminated waste need suitable containment and an authorised receiving facility. Broken glass and protective materials contaminated during an incident should remain separately identified.

Spill cleanup is a separate issue
Collecting a broken instrument does not prove that all released mercury has been removed. Cracks, porous surfaces and objects handled during the incident can retain contamination. Where a release has occurred, cleanup and any necessary investigation need to be considered separately from disposal of the visible item.
Handling after breakage
Mercury should not be collected with an ordinary household vacuum, which can spread contamination. The method must suit the material and the affected surface. Waste produced during cleanup then needs suitable containment and disposal as mercury-contaminated material.

No. Equipment should not be dismantled or emptied solely to simplify disposal.
Does collecting a broken instrument include cleaning up a spill?

Mercury-containing lamps need their own description and packaging within any agreed combined collection.
Can an ordinary household vacuum be used after a mercury breakage?
