4,476 reference records · 8 detailed guides

This index brings together chemical identities from the ILO / WHO International Chemical Safety Cards and the HSE GB mandatory classification and labelling list. Use the names, identifiers and available formulae to compare a product label, safety data sheet or waste inventory with the source record. Separate source entries may describe different forms or concentrations of the same substance. A match confirms only the source identity; it does not establish the composition of the waste, collection availability or a suitable treatment route. HSE identity information contains Crown copyright material reproduced under the Open Government Licence v3.0.

The detailed guides explain properties and waste-assessment points for particular chemicals. A chemical name or CAS number does not, on its own, establish a List of Waste code, packaging requirement, transport classification or receiving-facility acceptance.

Using chemical identity in a waste assessment

Identity is one part of the waste description. Concentration, process history, contamination and container condition can change the assessment even when the original product is known.

  • Identity: product name, CAS or EC number and the supplier safety data sheet.
  • Waste status: unused stock, spent process material, mixture or contaminated packaging.
  • Quantity and condition: amount, concentration, container sizes and container condition.
  • Process history: how the waste arose, including known additions, contaminants or any available analysis.
Source references and waste guidance

These sources cover chemical identity, safety data sheets and waste classification. Each has its own scope; none of them confirms that a particular waste load will be accepted by a receiving facility.
